Kenomee Hiking Trails System in the County of Colchester
Outdoor Enthusiasts!
Leave only footprints.
is in the area of Economy in Nova Scotia
It is divided into two legs. The first leg is along Thomas Cove, suitable for novice hikers. The "Moncton Outdoor Enthusiasts! Club" members saw two eagles while hiking this coastal trail in June of 2005. Blue herons and belted blue kingfishers also feed in this area.
The other leg winds above the Economy River to the Economy Falls which is not as beautiful as it was before part of it collapsed. This leg is not for novice hikers.
The Devil's Bend, Economy Falls, Cobequid Escarpment, and Kenomee Canyon Trails are part of the Kenomee Trails System.
The Devil's Bend Trail follows the Economy River along the edge of the river alley with several look-offs. From one of those look-offs Jean Siddall saw a large deer on June 19, 2005. If you keep quite you can see white-tailed deer, birds of prey, and songbirds. The trail winds up and down through a mature forest. This trail is between 6 and 7 kms from parking lot to Economy Falls. Yes! the round trip is double that. It is moderate with steep sections. It has painted route markers. A picture of a waterfall.
Access to Devil's Bend Trail is by route 2 to Economy. North onto River Phillip Road (unpaved road, rough sections meant for a jeep or truck). Follow road and signs for 4 kms. to Devil's Bend Trail (lower) parking area, or 7 kms. to Economy Falls (upper) parking area. More works needs to be done on this road before you can drive on it with a car you would like to keep for years.
The Economy Falls Trail is about 1 km. of gravel road, gravel path, dirt path, and wooden stairs to large waterfall. At Economy Falls, the Economy River Cascades over the Cobequid Escarpment on its way to the Bay of Fundy. Songbirds, wildflowers, and an ever-changing waterfall is what you will see.
Access is the same as to the Devil's Bend Trail. However, you have to drive to Economy Falls parking lot. Better to drive in a jeep than a car.
The Cobequid Escarpment Trail is a 2.5 km. loop. This loop follows a bridge across the Economy River gorge above Economy Falls and ascends to the upper slopes to the Cobequid Escarpment. From there the trail follows the east side of Economy River, crossing the river (there is no bridge at this crossing; bring an old pair of sneekers and a towel) and joins the Devil's Bend Trail which returns to the stairs leading to the falls. Lots of songbirds and wildflowers along side the trail.
Access is the same as to Economy Falls Trail.
The Kenomee Canyon trail is under construction. Paul Gaudet likes this hike. It is a spectacular and challenging hike through the provincially protected Economy River Wilderness Area. This trail is suitable for experienced hikers only. There are very steep sections and no bridges. Lots of river crossings. Bring an old pair of sneekers and a towel. This hike is worth getting up early in the morning to do. You can do it in a day or take your time and do it in two days. Camping is permitted at Newton Lake, Chain Lake Stream Falls and Murphy Brook Falls. It is sure to be a challenging hike.
Access the same as Economy Falls Trail.
If the road in to Economy Falls is ever paved, you will see Economy over run with tourists. It has a lot to offer them.
