The selection of outdoor equipment grows every year.  Each person must discover what equipment works best for him or her.

By law, you must carry matches, a knife, and a compass when you travel in the woods in most provinces in Canada and states in the USA.  You are required to know how to use the compass or a GPS.  Proper footwear is essential, and care should be taken  in selecting what you will use when hiking.  There are also other items that I think you should always include as minimum equipment:  map, water, food, whistle, first aid kit, garbage bag, warm sweater, rain jacket, and backpack.

The Dobson Trail 50th Anniversary was celebrated on Saturday October 3rd at the trail entrance on Pine Glen Road in Riverview.  The event includiong the unveiling of the monument and plaque donated by the town of Riverview.  Alonzo Leger led a convoy in a tour of the various entry points, with a brief hike to Prosser Ridge Look-Out; and a hike to the top of Hayward Pinnacle the highest point in South Eastern New Brunswick.  "The Moncton Outdoor Enthusiasts! Club" did take in this celebration.

Please Note.......

The letters C.O.C. stand for "Centennial Outdoor Center," which is our usual meeting place. It is the parking lot on St. George Blvd. past the main entrance to Centennial Park across the the street from Peoples Towers and Camden Park.

Before you lead a hike, please make sure you read the leader page.  This was recommended by Dave Kane at our last Annual General Meeting.

If you are meeting for an event at the second meeting place, be sure to call the leader to let him know you will be at the second meeting place.  If the leader does not hear from you, he may not go to the second meeting place for various reasons.  It is imperative you let the leader know you will be at the second meeting place so that you can be informed of any last minute changes.  Check our Guest Book for any last minute changes before leaving home for an event.  If you are an Aliant customer, check your talk-mail before leaving home for an event.

To get to the pages for "Outdoor Enthusiasts!" members only you will need the club password.  Contact me at 386-1290 to get club Password.

Hiking is one of the most popular activities in Fundy National Park.  The key to a safe, memorable hike is advance planning (Attend each Outdoor Enthusiasts! Planning Meeting):  Carry the appropriate clothing and equipment.  A sweater and a windbreaker are good insurance against variable weather.  I recommend footwear with good traction and support, such as hiking boots.  Plan your route and stick to it.  If you leave the trail, you may get lost.  In places where there is a substantial slope, park trails are often designed with switchbacks--S--shaped turns to lead you gradually up or down.  But not just you--to lead rainwater also slowly downhill rather than offering a path straight down that would erode into a gully by the higher speed of the water flow.  You will notice people have made shortcuts across those switchbacks--which become erosion problems.  Please help by staying ON THE TRAIL.  Know your physical limits.  Tell someone your plan and estimated time of return.  Bring water and food for longer hikes.  Please carry out all garbage, yours and any you may find on the trail.  Be considerate of other hikers when bring your pet on the trails; pets must be kept on a leash at all times in national and provincial parks; stoop and scoop every time!  The best way to see our national and provincial parks is with Outdoor Enthusiasts!
